It’s that time of year to select a middle school for your elementary student!

About the schools

The Medford Public School district has two middle schools adjacent to Hormel Stadium. Regardless of where you live in the city, all students who attend the Medford Public Schools can choose to attend the McGlynn School (K-8) or the Andrews School (6-8). The principal at the McGlynn School is Jake Edwards and the principal at the Andrews School is Paul D’Alleva.

Both schools are state of the art facilities, containing technologically enhanced classrooms, libraries, science labs, gyms, art studios, music rooms, cafeterias, parent centers and electronic security. Transportation to and from the schools is provided on an equitable basis. After school programs and other related special programs are offered at both schools.

The McGlynn School and the Andrews School are both excellent schools and attendance at one or the other is really only based upon your student’s preference to attend either a K-8 school or a 6-8 school.

March Open Houses

Both of our middle schools will be hosting Open Houses in early March:

  • Andrews Middle School Open House is Thursday, March 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm
  • McGlynn Middle School Open House is Thursday, March 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm

Selection process- deadline March 25, 2016

Parents and guardians of grade 5 students are urged to complete the Middle School Selection Form and return it to the Parent Center at Medford High School, 489 Winthrop Street, Medford, MA 02155, NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 2016.

Parents and guardians of grade 5 students are being advised to be on the lookout for a letter at the end of February in which the Middle School Selection Process will be explained.

After parents have had the opportunity to visit the schools, meet with the Principals, teachers and staff, they will have the chance to review their options and make their selection

If you do not return the form by the deadline, it will be assumed that your student has no preference and he/she will be assigned to an available seat at either school.

Every effort will be made to enroll your student in their first choice middle school, based upon space availability.

McGlynn 5th graders

Please note: students currently enrolled in Grade 5 at the McGlynn K-8 School will be automatically transferred to Grade 6 at the McGlynn, unless the parent/guardian indicates otherwise via submitting the completed form.

Special Programs

If the student participates in certain special needs programs and/or Sheltered English Language Learner Programs (formerly Bilingual), that student will be assigned based upon the location of the program.

Sibling Preference

If you have more than one student in the middle school, the acceptance of the first student will ensure that the second and third sibling will be assigned to the same school. If a student in the middle school is promoted to Grade 9, you will still retain the sibling preference for one year. Once again, please be advised that all assignments are subject to space availability.

Non-public school students

Non-public school parents must, in addition to the Middle School Selection Form, also submit a “Proof of Residency” along with that application.

Questions and Assistance

The Parent Information Center is ready to assist any parent/guardian with any questions or concerns regarding Middle School placement. Please do not hesitate to contact Maria Ibrahim at the Parent Information Center at (781) 393-2132.

It is important to stay in touch with the Medford Public Schools via their webpage and Medford Cable Channel 15 for any updates and additional announcements.
