Medford Middle Schools String Ensemble was founded in 2009 by Medford teacher Sophia Chang to encourage musical excellence. The program provides high quality orchestral training and has ignited passion for music making in many young people. The ensemble is open to students (grade 6-8) in Medford Public Schools by audition. To schedule an audition please contact Sophia Chang at schang@medford.k12.ma.us.
The Ensemble meets on Tuesdays 2:30 – 3:50 pm at McGlynn School, Room 302.
Audition Requirements
All candidates
- Essay Statement of your approach to music, learning attitude, team work, commitment, and expectations of joining the String Ensemble. 300 – 350 words.
- Two contrasting pieces or orchestra excerpts which best demonstrate your techniques and musicality.
6th Grade
- Two Octaves G major scale, broken thirds, and arpeggio.
- “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” in G major.
7th & 8th Grade
- Two Octaves A major scale, thirds, arpeggio (Violin)
- Two Octaves D major scale, thirds, arpeggio (Viola, Cello, Bass)
- ” My Country ‘Tis of Thee” in F major.
