This year’s community read wrapped up on May 24th with a culminating book event attended by students from both the Andrews Middle School and the McGlynn Middle School.  Activities at the event included creating “Kind” rocks for the community garden, signing the “Choose Kind” pledge,  solving the “Who Was” game , and showing off their Wonder knowledge in a group trivia game.

Wonder and Auggie & Me were the books for the 2016-17 middle school community read.  Students, staff, and faculty from both middle schools were invited to read the books and attend the community read event.  Through the eyes of different characters in the story, these books challenge the reader to think about the many opportunities we have to choose kindness in our daily lives.

Students participated by reading one of the books and completing activities in the online Middle School Community Read Google classroom.  Activities included writing about a favorite character in the book, telling a story about an example of kindness, drawing a picture of a scene or character from the book.

Modeled after other community read programs (sometimes called One Book), community read programs are intended to build community and encourage thought and discussion on important themes. The entire community of students, teachers, staff, and parents and guardians are invited to participate. The books chosen for the middle school community reads are generally focused around understanding differences, anti-bullying, student/global citizenship with a particular focus on middle school life or issues commonly faced by middle school students.

Thank you to the following groups for financial support of the 2016-2017 Middle School Community Read:  Medford Educational Foundation, Medford Public School Library Department, Andrews PTO, and McGlynn PTO.
