STEAM Workshop Series – New workshops announced

The middle school libraries in partnership with the Medford Public Library are pleased to announce a new series of STEAM workshops.  All MPS middle school students are invited to attend. Students can register for individual workshops on topics of interest them. To register or for more information, please go to the STEAM Workshop website.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Medford Arts Council, a local commission that is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the City of Medford.

Winter/Spring 2020 STEAM WORKSHOP SERIES

Learn Something! Make Something!

Join us in the middle school libraries for a series of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Workshops! 

Workshops will be offered at both middle school libraries and all Andrews and McGlynn middle school students are invited to participate.  Registration is required and space is limited.  Workshops will take place on Thursdays from 2:15 to 3 at the locations listed on the workshop schedule below.  (Please note that the location alternates between the Andrews Library and the McGlynn Library.)

You must register in advance and space is limited!   To register, please use the online, workshop-specific registration form located on the middle school homepage.  (Registration forms are also available in the school library.) Workshop-specific registration forms will be posted two weeks prior to the workshop date.

Intro to Stop Motion
Students will learn the basics of stop motion and begin creating their own stop motion scene. 

Thursday, February 13

Greeting Cards with LED Lights
Students will design their own greeting card using paper circuits to add light-up elements.

Thursday, February 27

Mini Hologram Projectors
Students will learn how to make a device that projects a 3D image.

Coaster Weaving
Students will use weaving techniques to transform a CD into a coaster.

Photo Recognition App
Students will learn how to create an app using Thunkable and Microsoft recognition software.

Tessellations
Students will create their own tessellation pattern and transfer it onto a canvas, shading in the different pieces to create images out of the pattern.

Personalized Tote Bags
Students will learn about Earth Day (4/22) and will design their own reusable canvas bag.

Thursday, May 7

Seismic Shakeup
Students will design a structure sturdy enough to withstand an earthquake.

Thursday, May 21

Bookish Sharpie Mugs
Students will personalize their own mugs with their favorite book quotes and images.

Shoebox Games 
Students will design a pinball machine or foosball game out of shoeboxes and other odds and ends.
