Geologist Visits MMS

Frank Bellini, a retired geologist, came to the McGlynn Middle School last week to visit with the 7th grade. He came with his wife, Cindy, who specializes in the fossil collection that he has accrued over the years.

Mr. Bellini started with a dynamic and engaging presentation for the students, talking about scientific and philosophical ideas about the universe and how it ties into the rocks and minerals here on Earth that always tell such amazing stories. After the conclusion of the presentation, Mr. Bellini then shared his lifelong collection of rocks, minerals and fossils with the 7th graders who were able to take a hands-on approach to their learning experience by traveling from station to station in Mrs. Bellini’s classroom.

A big thank you to Frank and Cindy Bellini for sharing their collection and time with the 7th graders of the McGlynn Middle School!

School Report Card

Dear Families:
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. A link to our school’s report card is available at http://reportcards.doe.mass.edu/2018/01760320.

The report card includes multiple measures of a school’s performance – more than just MCAS scores. It represents a new way of looking at school performance, by providing information on student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more.

Report cards are designed to be useful tools for everyone connected to our school. Families can use the information to have meaningful conversations with us about what the school is doing well and where there is room for improvement. Community and education leaders can use the information to better understand how to support students and our school.

You will notice on our report card that we are at the “Partially Meeting Targets” category. To improve student performance in our school, we have:

  • Redesigned the master schedule to better serve the needs of our population
  • Integrated the EL students
  • Created targeted Math and Literacy Intervention classes based upon multiple data points
  • Created a school-wide “WIN” Response to Intervention class

We encourage you to become involved in helping us improve our school. We see parents as critical partners in the success of our students and school, and we are grateful for your continued support.

Finally, if your child attends a school that receives federal Title I funds, you also have the right to request the following information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teachers:

  • Whether your child’s teacher is licensed in the grade levels and subject areas they teach,
  • Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under an emergency license or waiver,
  • The college degree and major of your child’s teacher, and
  • Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.

If you have questions about our school’s report card, would like to become involved in school improvement activities, or would like to request information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher, please contact me at 781-393-2333. To see our district’s report card or to search for other schools’ report cards, visit reportcards.doe.mass.edu.

Sincerely,

Nicholas L. Tucci

Middle School Update for 5th Grade Parents

$

It is the time of the year when fifth grade parents are looking at the middle schools and deciding which middle school they would like their child to attend. However, this year, middle school placement will be conducted via lottery, which was approved by the Medford School Committee at the February 11, 2019 meeting.

“We are one Medford, one district. We need to recognize that both middle schools offer our students a quality education. In order to ensure equity for all of our students, a cohort model is being implemented. There will be a lottery and 50% of students will be randomly selected from each elementary school. Half of the students from each elementary school will go to the Andrews and half will go to the McGlynn. Understanding the concerns of parents dropping off and picking up at multiple locations, there will be an accommodation for sibling preference. Additionally, to support the needs of students if there is an educational service requirement only offered at one of the middle schools, those needs would be accommodated for placement as well. Sibling preference would be offered to siblings currently attending the school,” said the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Marice Edouard-Vincent.

“Tentatively, the middle school lottery will be held sometime in April. Middle School orientations, rather than open houses, will be scheduled for students and parents in May. We intend to keep all parents fully informed of this process as it progresses,” said Vincent.

“If They Had Known” – presentation #2
Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 7:00 pm, Caron Theater, Medford High School

“If They Had Known” is a 35 minute film that focuses on the risks of current party culture. It is not a film about addiction. It is a candid film spoken by kids to kids about the risks of recreationally mixing prescription drugs with alcohol. The film is an honest and emotional account of a real event. It is a valuable viewing experience.” – Clay Soper Memorial Fund

Parents of all schools are cordially invited to attend one of the presentations! The film will be followed by a question and answer session.
