Middle School Pathways in Computer Science

Our new Middle School Pathways in Computer Science project, funded by the National Science Foundation Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) Program, will bring project-based, socially-relevant computing experiences to district middle school students. This new program is a partnership of the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML), the Tri-City Technology Education Collaborative Inc. (TRITEC), and the Medford and Everett Public School districts.

This partnership will result in a 15- to 20-hour computing curriculum developed by the middle school teachers that is integrated with their existing district technology and engineering courses during the school year. The project will also conduct intensive 30-hour summer camps for students at each middle school every summer.

The computer science curriculum will include creative project work and career awareness activities. Using MIT App Inventor, a program used to create mobile apps, students will develop their own apps to address socially-relevant needs in their communities. They will share their apps with each other, their friends, family, schools and community. In the summer intensive program, students will work with community partners and make apps that have a broader reach. University computer science students and industry professionals will visit project classrooms and work with middle school students.

Tufts Tutors Available

Hello, Middle-School Families –

Several wonderful members of the Tufts Literacy Corps are busy recruiting math tutors to work with kids on the Tufts campus.  If your children will benefit from one-on-one help with math, and you can bring them to Tufts, we can provide tutors who are great at math, genuinely enjoy middle schoolers and have decided to earn their financial aid awards by helping kids learn.  All TLC tutoring is set up for the entire Tufts academic year.  We give priority to children who can commit to tutoring at least once a week, from October through April.

This tutoring is free of charge to families and school districts.

If you are interested, please email:  tuftsliteracycorpsmath@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Dr. Cindy Krug

“Who Cares About Kelsey?” Documentary Film Screening
Wednesday, May 8
7-9 pm Andrews Middle School

Do you have a child who has social/emotional and/or behavioral challenges at school? Come see this remarkable film by Dan Habib which documents the lives of students with emotional/behavioral challenges. The film vividly captures innovative educational approaches that help these students to succeed – while improving the overall school culture and climate. We see high school senior Kelsey Carroll’s transformation from a defiant and disruptive “problem student” to a motivated and self-confident young woman. Along the way, critical figures in her life play important roles in an education revolution that’s about empowering—not overpowering—students with emotional/behavioral disabilities.

Including, a youth panel who will share their school experience and what they want our community to know about what matters most to our teenage students. The panel will offer a rare youth prospective that will leave you feeling inspired and motivated. There will be light refreshments and a question and answer period following the youth panel.
