New Middle School Youth Club

$

0

Medford-in-the-Middle (MinM), a local non-profit organization, and the West Medford Community Center (WMCC), a longstanding community resource, are joining forces to offer an afternoon middle-school youth club during the 2013-2014 school year.

The club will offer a safe, healthy, learning environment for a variety of activities and content intended to inspire middle school children to study, stay active, socialize, and develop and share skills, expertise and ideas. It will operate out of the WMCC at 111 Arlington St, West Medford on weekdays that the Medford Public Schools are in session. Coverage is planned for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays but may vary depending on interest and needs.

The club will be organized as a volunteer-supported community cooperative, staffed by CORIed parent volunteers, senior volunteers and university students. Staff will supervise and support homework sessions, sporting activities, projects, and other events. Club members will be encouraged to plan, design and implement their own projects and activities.

The club will be open, on a drop-in basis, to Medford students aged 10-14yrs or Grade 6-8. Younger siblings 8yrs or older will be accommodated if the parent is volunteering, provided space is available.

To join the club, a student will need to complete a registration form, provide evidence of adequate immunization, and submit payment for the participant fee of $100/year, which includes a youth membership for WMCC. Limited financial assistance is available and installment payments can be arranged. Completed registration forms along with fee will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited.

For more information or to express interest in joining the club, please contact: Medfordinthemiddle@gmail.com

MEDFORD-IN-THE-MIDDLE (MinM) is an independent non-profit organization, founded by local parents Maria Scott and Deborah Soule, which aims to support Medford ‘middle-schoolers’ and their families by providing resources and opportunities appropriate to and enriching the middle-school experience.

The WEST MEDFORD COMMUNITY CENTER (WMCC) operates under the guidance of current WMCC President Brian Collins and a Board of Directors. It offers a forum to connect the diverse people of West Medford and the Mystic River Valley through social, educational, cultural, health and recreational activities.

Medford School students have begun to visit their school libraries again this year! The library is an exciting place for all students. Class or individual visits to the library allow an opportunity for students to hear stories, research a topic or read a book!

This year, Medford Public Schools purchased and installed a new library database. Students, parents, and staff can access each school’s library collection through our web-based catalog from anywhere—home, school or on a mobile device (download Destiny Quest Mobile App from app store)!

Students and teachers will also have opportunities to write reviews of books they have read (they must sign in with a username and password, which will be created by librarians and/or classroom teachers) Go to the library homepage to start searching our library collection today!

Medford School Library Policies: Students are allowed to borrow books from the library. Please remind your child that any library book that is borrowed from his/her school must be properly taken care of. Library books may be brought home but must be returned on their due date. Middle School students may borrow a book for a two week period. We do not charge fines for overdue library books, but please try to have your child return their books on time since other students may be waiting to borrow the book. If a book is lost you are responsible to pay the cost for a replacement book.

If you have any questions about our school libraries please feel free to contact Mrs. Lannen, Medford School Librarian at hlannen@medford.k12.ma.us

Keeping Our Kids Safely in School

School Discipline, Restraint and Bullying

This presentation will examine the basics of school discipline, including an overview of disciplinary protections that become effective in 2014, protections for special education students, restrictions on the use of restraint and the Massachusetts protections from bullying.

With Attorney Tim Sindelar, a solo practitioner in Newton, where his practice focuses chiefly on special education and other litigation concerning the rights of children to essential services.

Prior to entering private practice Tim was a Senior Staff Attorney at the Disability Law Center in Boston for more than eight years. Before coming to the Disability Law Center, Tim worked for more than 15 years in legal services programs in Massachusetts, Nebraska and West Virginia.

Tim has represented hundreds of families in matters before the Bureau of Special Education Appeals and the state and federal courts on special education issues. He has served on a number of advisory groups for the Massachusetts Departments of Education and Developmental Services and the Disabled Persons Protection Commission. Tim has presented testimony to committees of the United States Senate and the Massachusetts General Court on education and health matters.
